Shanghai launches green methanol production project to support international shipping   2025-01-13

On January 2, construction began on a project at the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park aimed at producing 100,000 tons of green methanol annually. This initiative seeks to convert wet waste and animal manure into biomethane, which will subsequently be injected into the city’s gas pipeline.

The natural gas extracted from the pipeline will be transformed into green methanol, specifically intended for use in cruise and cargo ships. This project represents a significant step in Shanghai's ambition to establish itself as an international shipping hub.

The global shipping sector has experienced a surge in demand for carbon emission reduction technologies. As of June 2024, the number of methanol-powered vessels has reached 35, with an additional 269 orders currently in the pipeline. The ports of Rotterdam and Singapore are recognized as key refueling centers for green methanol worldwide.

In April, Shanghai's Yangshan port achieved a milestone by conducting China’s first ship-to-ship green methanol fueling for a large container vessel. The city's first green methanol project is anticipated to commence trial operations in early 2026, which will significantly enhance Shanghai Port's refueling capabilities. The goal is to achieve an annual refueling capacity of 100 million cubic meters of LNG and 100 million tons of green methanol and biofuels by the year 2030.
