A BREAKTHROUGH by Shanghai scientists offers the possibility of improved drugs to treat cardiovascular disease and other blood-clotting conditions.

A team from the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has decoded the structure of P2Y12R protein, which is responsible for the formation of blood-clotting protein.

Thrombus — or blood-clotting — includes conditions such as strokes and coronary heart disease. In China, 2 million people suffer strokes each year.
