A bird's-eye view of Jiading New CityJiading District witnessed solid progress in building a modern "new city" over the past five years, with strong momentum in innovation, industry and urban development, a press conference heard on Wednesday.
Positioned as Shanghai's northwestern gateway, Jiading is home to the city's intelligent vehicle hub, a key component of the Shanghai international science and technology innovation center, and part of the core area of the Hongqiao International Open Hub.
With a solid industrial base, strong innovation capacity, and a rich cultural and ecological environment, the suburban district has accelerated transformation into a benchmark for high-quality development.
Jiading's fixed asset investment surpassed 300 billion yuan (US$42 billion) during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), exceeding the target by more than 500 billion yuan.
The above-scale automobile industry achieved over 300 billion yuan in industrial output, consolidating Jiading's position as China's premier automotive innovation base.
"Emerging sectors such as smart vehicles, integrated circuits and biomedicine have become new engines of development in Jiading, growing at an average annual rate of 13.8 percent, with total output reaching 360.3 billion yuan in 2024," Xiao Wengao, Party secretary of the district, said during the press conference.
"Future industries such as low-altitude economy have also achieved accelerated development in Jiading."
Jiading's innovation ecosystem continues to gain strength, with R&D expenditure at 6.22 percent of GDP, ranking among the city's highest.
The district is home to 2,578 high-tech enterprises, 1,343 specialized and innovative small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and 36 listed companies.
Jiading advanced large-scale projects such as the Yuanxiang Lake Central Activity Zone and the Ximen Historic and Cultural Block, while 14 new urban parks have been completed.
The Yuanxiang Lake core area and the Hengli River cultural corridor have been upgraded, with forest coverage of Jiading New City reaching 17.4 percent.
