Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen Are China's Biggest Hirers, Report Says
Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen had the most job vacancies available in China last year, despite the conservative hiring attitude by many employers due to the downturn in the macroeconomy both at home and abroad as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The four first-tier cities accounted for 40.5 percent of all recruitment postings in the country, according to a research report released by Chinese hiring platform Liepin on Jan. 13. The other cities in the top 10 were Hangzhou, Chengdu, Suzhou, Wuhan, Nanjing and Chongqing. These are also the 10 municipalities with the biggest economies in the country.
Hangzhou in southeastern Zhejiang province, home to Chinese e-commerce titan Alibaba Group Holding, offered the fourth highest salaries on average, more than the first-tier city of Guangzhou.
Hangzhou's digital economy is well-developed and this has generated solid industrial foundations and local business clusters, hence the large number of vacant positions, Ding Changfa, associate professor at the Economics Department of Xiamen University, told Yicai Global. Also, the province's private economy is very developed, spurring demand for skilled workers.
There are big advantages in terms of the number of jobs on offer and the size of the pay check in the Yangtze River Delta region, which encompasses Shanghai and the surrounding areas, as well as the Guangdong- Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, which revolves around Shenzhen, compared with other areas in China.
There are clusters of first and second-tier cities in these two regions, Ding said. For those people looking to get a leg up the career ladder, the proximity of big cities and the developed industrial chains mean there is a wider range of jobs on offer and it is cheaper to travel between cities.
Upbeat Outlook
Some 78.6 percent of companies intend to recruit the same number of people this year as they did last year, the report said. Only 14 percent intend to increase their headcount. The three sectors with the biggest recruitment needs are chemical industry and environmental protection at 27.3 percent, electronics, communications and semiconductors at 23.1 percent and machinery and manufacturing at 22.5 percent.
About 70 percent of the polled firms plan to hire fresh graduates, especially those in the energy, finance and semiconductor sectors. Companies pay the most attention to the correlation between graduates' majors and the job posts, any relevant internships or work experience they have as well as their potential for improvement after training.
About 84.5 percent of the job hunters polled are confident about finding work this year, and the younger they are the more confident they are, the report said.
Over 70 percent of those polled said that the main reason for their uptick in confidence is either the relaxed pandemic prevention measures which should lead to more jobs coming on the market, or the rebound in the economy which will boost the employment market.
