Oriental Chic Summit champions Chinese culture and cross-strait ties

The 2026 Oriental Chic Development Summit, which took place in Shanghai on April 25, brought together cross-Strait officials and industry leaders to enhance cultural exchange, industrial collaboration and youth cooperation across fashion and creative sectors.

Centered on Oriental chic, it also sought to nurture homegrown fashion brands that embody the essence of Chinese aesthetics and traditional oriental artistic charm.

In his keynote address, Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng said that Chinese aesthetics and fashion are deeply rooted in the nation's time-honored cultural heritage, reflecting the shared aspiration for a better quality of life among people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. Such cultural pursuits serve as a key catalyst for cultural innovation, industrial upgrading and consumption expansion.

Shanghai Mayor Gong Zheng delivers a speech during the event.

"This summit stands as a vivid example of cross-Strait joint efforts to carry forward Chinese culture and drive high-quality socio-economic development," Gong said. "We hope the event will showcase unique Chinese elegance and leverage Shanghai's strengths to inject new vitality into the global fashion industry."

Gong reaffirmed Shanghai's adherence to the "one big family across the Strait" philosophy, vowing to fully implement the newly released ten special policies designed to boost cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation.

Hung Hsiu-chu, former chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang and chair of the Chinese Cyan Geese Peace Education Foundation, underscored the long-shared cultural heritage and common national identity binding cross-Strait communities. She stressed the urgency of upholding the 1992 Consensus and opposing "Taiwan independence" to rebuild mutual trust and sustain constructive cross-Strait dialogue.

"Taiwan boasts delicate, refined creativity in cultural and aesthetic design, while the mainland features massive market potential and mature industrial integration advantages," Hung pointed out. "By joining hands, we can elevate oriental chic onto the global cultural and fashion stage."

Hailing Shanghai as an open, inclusive metropolis and a vital gateway linking Chinese civilization with the world, Hung called on participants to capitalize on the summit platform to facilitate industrial connectivity and unlock more employment and startup opportunities for young people from both sides.

"Let culture empower industries, and let industries carry cultural heritage forward," she said. "May Oriental chic evolve into an iconic cultural landmark that wins global admiration for Chinese civilization."

Zhao Shitong, deputy director of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, cited President Xi Jinping's recent meeting with a KMT delegation led by party chair Cheng Li-wen, noting that it has set a clear direction for the future of cross-Strait relations.

He urged cross-Strait compatriots to preserve cultural roots as inheritors of Chinese aesthetics, expand bilateral cooperation as drivers of integrated development, and embrace historical responsibilities as contributors to national rejuvenation.
