Molly's 20th anniversary exhibition kicks off in Shanghai

Molly's 20th Anniversary Exhibition, co-organized by Pop Mart and artist Kenny Wong, will open at Shanghai's Fosun Foundation on Saturday and run until May 10, marking the largest offline showcase of the iconic IP on its world tour.
The Molly 20th Anniversary Exhibition, co-organized by Pop Mart and Hong Kong artist Kenny Wong, will open at the Fosun Foundation in Shanghai last Saturday and will run until May 10. As the second stop of Molly's 20th anniversary world tour, it is the largest offline IP-themed exhibition of Molly to date.
Created by Wong in 2006, Molly is one of Pop Mart's most iconic IPs.
With the theme "the little galaxy", the exhibition continues the classic narrative of its Hong Kong stop, tracing Molly's 20-year journey through original manuscripts, classic collectible figurines, highly restored studio scenes, and precious works spanning two decades.
Newly unveiled themed pavilions — including Molly, Baby Molly, Angry Molly, Space Molly, and Royal Molly — interpret the multiple cores of imagination, innocence, courage, and guardianship.

A highlight exclusive to the Shanghai stop is the debut of the 'Me' and Molly chapter, which gathers more than 20 outstanding artists and intangible cultural heritage craftsmen from diverse backgrounds to conduct in-depth dialogues with Molly through their unique artistic languages.
Peking Opera colored clay mask inheritor Zhao Nan presents the Monkey King, a piece that took nearly eight months to create. The work features a face mask with traditional opera elements and costume, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern pop culture.
"The biggest challenge was adapting the traditional gold-thread embroidery technique to modern pop culture toys without it seeming out of place," Zhao said.
Yan Bei, whose daughter is a Molly fan with a collection of over 200 Molly figurines, is a craftsman skilled in the art of gold-inlaid lacquerware. He introduced his creation, Guardian of Starlight, using traditional Chinese lacquer techniques.

"Combining traditional intangible cultural heritage crafts with modern pop culture toys breathes new life into ancestral techniques," Yan said. "The fusion of traditional craftsmanship's depth with the trendiness of pop culture toys has exceeded expectations, showcasing the diverse possibilities of traditional skills to a broader audience."
The exhibition also features the Molly Art Workshop, where participants can engage in immersive experiences such as hand-painting exclusive leather pendants.
Currently, Pop Mart operates more than 50 offline stores in Shanghai, with two flagship stores on Nanjing Road attracting global tourists and becoming urban cultural experience landmarks.
"Never did I expect 20 years to pass so quickly," Wong said. "Over these 20 years, this stubborn and persistent Molly has unknowingly brought a lot of joy to people, given new definitions and meanings to the world, accompanied and healed people's hearts, and helped many children in need."
