Shanghai launched its 2026 Table Tennis Carnival last Sunday, with Mayor Gong Zheng attending the opening ceremony at Shanghai Indoor Stadium and declaring the citywide program open.

The carnival will run through August and is designed as a citywide series of professional competitions and public participation events spanning sports venues, cultural landmarks, office buildings, commercial spaces and tourist attractions.
Officials said the program comes at a symbolic moment, coinciding with the 55th anniversary of China-US ping-pong diplomacy as well as centenary milestones tied to the International Table Tennis Federation and the World Table Tennis Championships.
At the opening ceremony, Shanghai finalized the matchup structure for a city-level round-robin competition involving all 16 districts. Organizers said the professional segment will include a mixed-team champions league and a city individual championships event, while amateur players will also be able to compete through public-facing activities.
A group of veteran and active table tennis figures, including Xu Yinsheng, Li Furong, Zhang Xielin, Ni Xialian and Xu Xin, appeared as honorary ambassadors for the event. Organizers also staged a themed exhibition on the history of table tennis in Shanghai and set up an interactive fair featuring games such as table tennis bowling and target challenges.
The city said the carnival is intended not only to showcase Shanghai's table tennis tradition but also to support deeper integration among culture, commerce, tourism, sports and exhibitions. Some of the related displays will continue to tour selected cultural venues, sports facilities, campuses and shopping areas.
With district teams set to compete over the next four months for places in a final four, officials are betting that the sport's broad public appeal can turn the event into a sustained citywide celebration rather than a one-day opening show.
